For a long time, we here at Nintendo Connect have wondered if having faster, higher classed SD cards in our 3DS’s would make a difference in performance. So we ran the Resident Evil: Revelations demo off of 4 differently classed SD cards 3 times each for an average, and timed the loading times of each. We chose the RE: Revelations demo because it plays off the the SD card. Yes… we wasted a few of our precious limited uses to bring you these results.
| CLASS | CAPACITY | 3DS MENU TO CAPCOM LOGO | RE MENU TO LEVEL | VIDEO TO GAMEPLAY |
| - | 2 GB | 8.8 SECONDS | 9.8 SECONDS | 10.4 SECONDS |
| 2 | 8 GB | 9.0 SECONDS | 9.8 SECONDS | 10.3 SECONDS |
| 6 | 8 GB | 9.1 SECONDS | 9.7 SECONDS | 10.4 SECONDS |
| 10 | 32 GB | 9.1 SECONDS | 9.6 SECONDS | 10.5 SECONDS |
It turns out there isn’t much difference at all. Which leads me to believe that perhaps the SD card reader inside the 3DS is set to read at a certain speed, no matter what class card you have. So go ahead and buy whatever class you want since it doesn’t really even matter… unless you’re like us and it would bug you knowing that inside your 3DS resided a card that only had a class 6 instead of 10.
Another Techspert Take by Ryan
I was with Matt during the testing of these cards, and these cards no matter brand/class all performed near identically. RE: Revelations is the biggest demo in the shop, with Snake Eater 3D as the second largest. We tested Snake Eater 3D as well and this confirmed our theory. The other thing to consider about SD cards is that the read speed is almost always faster than the write speeds, and considerably so. As write speeds to the cards probably won’t bottleneck your download speeds of games and through our testing of read speeds, you should be fine purchasing any trusted name brand SD card no matter class speed for near-identical performance.

[...] know which options would be best and we would like to share our research with you. Just as we did with 3DS SD card options, we will now do the same for the Wii [...]
Huh. I thought for sure the class would matter. Thanks for the help guys! A lot less stress for me.
