When Nintendo discussed how they were concerned with consumers not being able to find the sync button on Wii consoles from their recent “Iwata Asks” video, they were also serious about Wii remotes too. After unboxing a new Wii U-branded Wii remote we discovered this unannounced change:
The sync button which was previously hidden under the confines under the battery cover is now easily accessed in the open. Nintendo is also taking precautions of easily accessible sync buttons with its new Wii U Pro controllers as well. While we can’t find any disadvantage to having an exposed sync button, it does make us wonder why it was so “hidden” in the first place.

My niece got a brand new pink Wii remote back in June for her birthday and it has the sync button the back. I don’t think this is just for the Wii U branded Wii remotes. Infact, they aren’t even Wii U branded, the controllers that is. Just the packaging.

As others are saying, these have had the sync button on the back for the last several months. In fact, the only difference is to the battery cover and sleeve – the controller is the same design and still has the button on the inside, the battery cover just adds an extra way to access it. I’ve heard there are also functional differences in the controllers – many homebrew apps have been rewritten recently to work with the new controllers, as I’ve heard Nintendo has stopped supporting a communication mode in the controllers that homebrew typically used.
ya this is correct, although I’m not too sure that homebrew has been updated or rewritten.. Many of the major homebrew apps still don’t work with these new wii motes.

Actually, this article is slightly incorrect.
A few months ago Nintendo actually made this change to the actual wii remote plus. The boxes remained the same but the remote inside featured this new design. Based on what I am seeing there is no change between those newer Wii branded Wii Remotes and the ones that are now being branded as Wii U.
